Ramón Ivanoes Barreto Ruiz (born September 14, 1939 in
Montevideo, died on April 4, 2015) was a Uruguayan professional association
football referee.
So far, he is the only referee in the history of the FIFA
World Cup to have been appointed to two consecutive Final matches: in 1974 in
Munich, and in 1978 in Buenos Aires, both as assistant referee.
Barreto was first selected as a World Cup Finals referee in
Germany. He officiated the highly publicised match between East Germany and
West Germany (1-0) in Hamburg and Poland vs. Sweden (1-0) in Stuttgart. He also
assisted UK referee Jack Taylor during the final between West Germany and the
Netherlands (2-1)
Besides the two World Cups, Barreto is, perhaps, famous also
as the man who sent off UK player Trevor Cherry in the game between England and
Argentina at the Bombonera during England's tour of South America in 1977.
Barreto was selected for his second World Cup in 1978 in
Argentina. He was appointed central referee for Italy vs Hungary (3-1) and the
repeat of the 1974 Final between West Germany and the Netherlands (2-2). He was
then selected as assistant referee for the final game between Argentina and the
Netherlands (3-1), with Sergio Gonella, the first Italian ever to referee the
final.
Barreto also officiated during the 1970 World Cup in Mexico & was the referee of the 1976 Olympic Games final in Montreal
